My weaving incorporates recycled Ghanaian plastic and fabric, as well as natural materials from plants, to make unique, handmade art and homewares that create a captivating focal point in any space.
Besides weaving, I also teach weaving workshops (see below) using the Bolga basket weaving technique from my village where I grew up weaving beside my mother, and my grandmothers and aunties (also considered as my mothers), as a child in Ghana.
Weaving is meditative and therapeutic. It’s a creative act and it’s a slow, deliberate process. You can’t rush it no matter how much you may want to. Its inherent “slowness” makes it the perfect antidote to our fast-paced, digital lives.
As your hands and fingers touch natural (or recycled) fibers, you experience a kind of tactile bliss. I find this a welcome change to the artificial smoothness of metallic and plastic gadgets we touch most of our living days.
The weaving process gives you space and time to process and consider life’s challenges. I’m no longer surprised that weaving helps me find solutions to completely unrelated problems in another part of life. After a few hours of weaving I always find I’ve solved something!
Weaving is great for mental health and practicing patience. I call it my moving meditation. And, best of all, you get a unique and handmade object to keep at the end of it.
I run Bolga basket weaving workshops for groups of up to ten. Workshops are typically 4 hours or more and include all your materials so that you’ll take home your own recycled basket. We’re running workshops in Sydney, Byron Bay, Armidale and Canberra between July-December 2017.
In the weaving workshops I’ll share how weaving provides a profound connection to my childhood, family, and my community. It tells the story of a community in Ghana and, by weaving, we help keep that story and knowledge alive. You can be part of that experience!
I make wall hanging weavings using the Bolga basket weaving techniques. Each piece is bespoke and hand-made just for you. I consult with you and design a weaving to suit your space and colour preferences.
I’d love to work with you to create a weaving to your preferred dimensions and colours.
I also weave pendant lamps which stand alone as a range as part of my interior homewares collection.
Lately I’ve been working with denim! Just like in your jeans, it comes in all the blues you can imagine. When I weave the strands of these blues together, they create depth and subtle elegance. It’s a wonderful way to create beauty and reduce waste.
This is my Instagram account where I share photos and videos of works in progress and finished work.
Please send a message about your weaving vision via the contact form. I’ll reply within 24 hours.
